One hundred years ago, on 25 January 1915, the First Australian General Hospital opened in the large and impressive Heliopolis Palace Hotel, on the north-east edge of Cairo, staffed by doctors and nurses who sailed from Australia on November 21. The hospital had 520 beds and received patients of all ranks of the AIF, with all classes of cases being treated. Weve gone digging through the Australian War Memorial archives again, and have found some amazing images of the hospital.
