One hundred years ago this month, soldiers fighting in the trenches along the Western Front in World War I temporarily ceased hostilities to celebrate the holidays with the people they had been ordered to kill. French, German and British forces exchanged food and liquor, shared stories and songs and even found time to play soccer. The 2006 film, Joyeux Noel, (available at many SDPL branches) memorializes a time when men caught in the horrors of battle stopped to celebrate and rediscover their humanity through finding common cause with their enemies.
