One important ingredient missing in our lives today is softness - TopicsExpress

One important ingredient missing in our lives today is softness towards the Quran. Our hearts have hardened to the point where we are no longer affected by the verses we read. Our eyes do not shed tears and our hearts are not moved. The recitation of the Quran feels like a burden to those of us who read it, while the rest of us will allow it to gather dust from one Ramadan to the next. When we compare our state with the Quran to that of the companions, the difference becomes very noticeable. Abu Bakr (radi allahu anhu) would struggle leading the prayer from the amount he would cry. Umar (radi allahu anhu) became ill from reciting, Verily, the Torment of your Lord will surely come to pass. There is none that can avert it. [2:7-8]. They would repeat one verse many times contemplating its meaning and allowing it to penetrate their hearts while crying over it. When the Prophet peace be upon him recited the verse “So fall you down in prostration to Allah and worship Him (Alone).” [An-Najm: 62], he prostrated. Not only did the Muslims prostrate but the pagans who were listening to this surah were so taken by the words they had heard that they prostrated too. They recognised the words they were listening to were so unique and powerful that they fell into prostration. Ibn Al-Qayyim said with regards to what one should do to cure his weak Iman using the Quran, First you should remove your heart from the life of this world and settle it in the Last Life. Then, pay your full attention to pursuing the meanings of the Quran, and try to comprehend and understand them and what they were sent down to accomplish. Then, offer these meanings to the sickness that your heart feels, and when they touch the disease, they will cure the heart, Allah willing. May Allah strengthen our iman, soften our hearts to His words and allow us to gain a deep understanding of the Quran, ameen.
