One in 68 children, 1 in 42 boys have autism. Us autism parents arent going to be around forever. At some point, even if you dont have a child with autism, autism is going to affect you. I sometimes get scared pointing out this fact because I dont want the public to resent individuals with autism. But in reality, autism is going to become every tax payers problem in no time. The bulk of the epidemic is currently under 18, but that is going to change quickly. More has to be done to manage this crisis in a meaningful way. Services, treatments and prevention have to be a priority. No more sending resources to the same old programs that send funds to the same doctors searching for a variation on the same hypothesis they have had for decades. Other than public awareness and insurance reform in many states, I honestly cant think of much that has gotten better since my son was diagnosed fourteen years ago. Please watch as two families dealing with autism talk about the financial toll this disorder has taken on their families. Exhausted and broke is how a majority of autism families live. This country has to fix this.
