One in six. Seriously - ONE IN SIX. You dont know someone with herpes. You know a whooooole lot of people with herpes. As long as I continue to hear misinformation about things, Im gonna keep talking about the things. Know the facts. Understand how you get it and understand prevention. Know when it can be a big deal (partners with HIV and third trimester of pregnancy), and realize the rest of the time ... its not such a big deal. The stigma is ridiculous. And the misinformation - also ridiculous. When you hear someone making a joke or referring to herpes (or a person with herpes) as gross or promiscuous, do your part and say, Hey, you there with the not-knowing. Let me shoot you some accurate info. Because with the information we know, it is quite possible that person saying that very thing (whispering) *has herpes and they dont even know it.* Some think of people like Peckham as immoral, assuming only people who sleep around get genital herpes. The stigma of the virus, which exists at the heart of this faulty mindset, is usually worse than the symptoms themselves, as it affects dating, social life and psychological health.
