One interesting way to spend time in Paris is to visit the Catacombs. These were originally a mine for limestone, then it was forgotten for many years until about roughly three centuries ago, when the ground started caving in. So they dug it up and discovered the tunnels, and decided to use them as an ossuary. In this process the stiffs get buried up near the surface for a few years, then get moved down below when they are nothing but bones. If you are lucky they make a nice pattern with your head. It is a long way underground, and you take a narrow staircase which is a bit suffocating. On the way back up you are greeted with a defibrillator in the hallway. In the third picture you see a small little carved replica of an old building, which is rather peculiar, being located so far under ground. This is all just across the street from the cemetery where Jim Morrison is buried, btw.
