One is tempted to agree that corruption is not Nigerias biggest - TopicsExpress

One is tempted to agree that corruption is not Nigerias biggest problem afterall. Our biggest problem may actually be the judiciary. Several instances abound of how the judiciary was used to scuttle the Nigerian dream. From the judicial coup by Justice Ikpeme that granted injunction stopping NEC from conducting the election, providing ground for the eventual annulment of the June 12 1993 election to the perpetual injunction granted former Rivers State governor, Peter Odili, Nigerians have always been at the receiving end. More recently, Sanusi secured an injunction to stop the investigation of his tenure as CBN governor, and now Allison Madueke has secured another controversial injunction stopping the House of Reps from probing the N10 billion jet scandal. Given the way the judiciary has always awarded favourable judgement to the rich and corrupt against the Nigerian people and the state, the journey to reclaim Nigeria must start from sanitising the judiciary and, perhaps, the police. The failure of our judiciary and our policing system is responsible for the impunity with which crime, embezzlement and other atrocities have reached alarming levels. In fact, the failure of the judiciary has emboldened the corrupt in our midst. A deep and critical look at the current situation may not completely absolve these two public institutions from the Boko haram debacle. It is the reason why, in many instances, people resort to self help, having lost faith in the ability of our system to meet their needs. The judiciary and the police is key to restoring hope in our country, as injustice anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere. Why are we like this?
