One last Veterans Day story... The true meaning of brotherhood and sacrifice... It was early morning in Vietnam, around 3am and I was sitting in an old French bunker with a fellow soldier who happened to be African American. We knew we were going to get hit that night and we both sat there in the dark, squinting our eyes and looking out into the jungle perimeter for any movement. We really didnt know what to expect...Flares were going up to light the area and Spooky ( C-130) gunships were circling overhead. Suddenly, a barrage of mortars and 122mm rockets started pouring in on us, One rocket came in pretty close to where we were... He looked at me and said, If this is our time lets do this, lets fight and take as many of these SOBs with us, lets go out as brothers and know that we gave everything for one another......
