One metaphor for this is what happens to the dying caterpillar in the cocoon, as it mobilizes its immune system against the threat of the imaginal cells that are working to reorganize the disintegrating goop of the caterpillar into its next emergent form, a.k.a. the butterfly. At some point, the cellular community switches allegiances.
