One more rant before the weekend. What irks me most about trophy hunters (a la Kendall Jones from whose page I have been banned) is that they keep justifying what they do based on the fact that their hunts provide much-needed meat for local villagers. Here are my musings on that: 1. Ive yet to meet rural people in Southern Africa who would eat lions and leopards. So the justification is moot for predators. 2. Yes an elephant gets divided quickly among the villagers, weve all seen those photos. But how long does the meat last, even if they have access to refrigeration? 10 days, 2 weeks per family? 3. If you REALLY are doing it to benefit the locals and provide food for them - why not use the $40,000 you paid for that elephant hunt and buy the village food for a year and warm blankets? Youd probably have change left to enjoy a weekend at Victoria Falls in good luxury... Big game hunters should just come out and admit that they love killing these animals - and that is the MAIN reason they do it. Helping local villagers is a comfortable go-to to ward off critique of their actions. It was never and will never be the reason for hunting vulnerable and endangered species. Any thoughts you guys might want to add here? /cc Daryl Balfour Jaco Marx Jacobus Albertus Slabbert Zane Engelbrecht Simon Espley Peter Borchert
