One more story and then I have to get work done. Yall will just have to entertain yourself. I was reminded of this today because there was an athletic competition of sorts happening in the downtown area of the city I live in. I have mentioned this story several times to people and always, always they act horrified. Horrified. Even the jocks and muscle boys. I think I was in my 30s if not 40s before I found out this didnt happen in everyones school. When I was in Jr High school, in gym class you had these competition things twice a year where you had to do all kinds of cruel and unusual things like push ups and pull ups and rope climbs and jumping and I cant even remember what all else. I think it lasted a week. It seemed like ten years. At the end whatever score you received by being able to do these things determined the COLOR of the gym trunks you wore the rest of the year, or half year. No, Im not kidding. I think there were three or four levels, starting with Gold. There was also a Green and I dont know what else. I think I was CLEAR. Very few people got gold. Steve Longoria, who was the nicer and smarter of the jocks always did. He was a straight A student and kind to everyone. Mark Lagomarsino or however it is spelled also got gold. He was a bully and my nemesis throughout Jr High and High School - although on the very last day of High School he pulled me aside and APOLOGIZED for tormenting me (like the time he and about 20 of his best buds surrounded my best friend and me in the showers and said Are you two FAGGOTS? while everyone laughed. Hey Mark, if you are reading this, I lied. I was and I am. Best thing that ever happened to me. I hear you are a drunk and a loser now. Oops. Sorry about that. During the apology, I kept thinking he was going to pull out a gun and shoot me.) Anyway, so yeah - that is how it worked in my gym class. Imagine if we had that in History or English or Art. If you sucked, you had to wear an ugly color shirt. If you were okay, you wore a so and so shirt. If you were FABULOUS, you wore GOLD. Yeah, Im not so big on the sportsball. Trauma and all.
