One more week to register! Limited spaces left! SATURDAY KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: Welcome to the Next Generation Science Standards - Using the Environment to Build Capacity for Science Education in New Jersey Michael Heinz State Science Coordinator, New Jersey Department of Education Missy Holzer Earth and Space Science Teacher, Chatham High School Past-President, National Earth Science Teachers Association The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were adopted by the New Jersey State Board of Education in July, 2014. According to the North American Association for Environmental Education, “The NGSS represent an unprecedented opportunity for the environmental and sustainability education community…The good news is that NGSS is strong on environmental content, much stronger than what is being taught now in the vast majority of schools throughout the nation.” Mike Heinz, New Jersey’s State Science Coordinator, will provide an overview of the NGSS and will touch on methods and timeline for delivery and plans for STEM, student assessment and professional development. Missy Holzer, exemplary science teacher with Chatham High School, will review the earth systems standard and the State’s new earth systems model curriculum. Bridging the connections between the formal and non-formal education environments, Mike and Missy will discuss how environmental educators can interface with NGSS in areas such as program alignment, resource sharing, professional development, field studies and citizen science programs.
