One of Lowells few remaining blocks of company boarding houses, located at Boarding House Park. If you have not checked this spot out, you should. There is a set up there - complete with furniture, bedding, examples if diet and copies of letters mill girls wrote home - that recreates what a boarding house looked like in the early 19th century. Eventually, thousands of young women from across New England lived in such spaces and walked to work at the call of the mill bells bright and early every morning for a 14 hour day, Monday - Friday and usually 5 or 6 hours on Saturday. Tough and dangerous work - lots of accidents and lung-related illnesses from breathing the cotton fibers always in the air.
