One of lifes great (and beautiful) paradoxes is that a nearly sure-fire way to battle the blues is to go out and in the course of your day get in the habit of doing things for people for which you will receive absolutely no formal (or even informal) recognition, like holding the door, letting a person move in front of you in traffic, paying for the person behind you in the Starbucks drive-through, shoveling (or raking) for an infirm person, gathering a couple shopping carts and bringing them back to the store, etc. It makes sense that if the Augustinian theory that evil and suffering represents the absence of good is true, then good deeds produce good feelings, because we become closer to our creator, and face toward the light rather than away. This aint no sermon, just a recognition of the way we are designed. Peace.
