One of many great treats that come with spending the summer in New Haven is getting to hear Friday night carillon summer series concerts. Harkness Tower—Yales iconic bell tower that overlooks Branford College—is home to the Harkness Memorial Carillon with 54-bells, pitched in B. Tonight at 7:00 PM, Julie Zhu (13) will play those bells for the fifth concert in the Summer 2014 Concert Series. During the school year, members of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs play the bells from a small room high in the tower around lunch and dinner time each day. The tower, built in 1917, is 216 feet tall, with 284 steps to the roof. Fun fact: the lowest bell weights 13,400 pounds.
