One of many works currently showing here at mima in International Exchanges: Modern Art and St Ives 1915-1965 is Henri Gaudier-Brzeskas Sepulchral Figure. It has been said that Gaudier-Brzeska was reliant on cheap off-cuts or gifts of material and was rumored to have stolen stone from masons yards at night. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Tate St Ives, and explores the national and international contexts which shaped art in the port town of St Ives, an artistic centre of international importance during the 1940s, 50s and 60s. See this work here at mima until 25 January alongside major works by artists such as Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, alongside those of their contemporaries from elsewhere in Europe, America and beyond, such as Wassily Kandinsky and Mark Rothko.
