One of my New Years resolutions was to make sure my kids really know how to shoot good. Theyre already safe and proficient, but come on, were a family of gun nuts. Weve got a rep to keep up. I took my kids shooting again this morning. Weve been going 2x a month for the last few months. They are getting pretty darn good. Its been a lot of fun too. Good confidence building exercise and family bonding. The 14 year old goes full on beast mode with my STI 9mm now. It sounds like an UZI, and then afterwards Im proud, but a little sad that there went half a box of ammo. I had her shoot my wifes Walther 9mm today, and she was like Meh... Its okay... Then back to the STI. Ive had her try several other guns, but she keeps coming back and claiming that STI. Aint gonna happen, kid. :) The 12 year old is still more comfortable with .22 than centerfire, but since she is left handed she was having trouble manipulating the Buckmark (it can be done left handed, but the safety sucks, and why make something that is supposed to be fun, suck?) So I bought her a Smith & Wesson M&P .22 this morning. (she picked it over the Walther P22). She did great with it. And the folks I asked about letfty friendly .22s last time, good recommendation. We only put about 150 rounds through it today, but not a single malfunction with CCI Blazer. Since it was the kids, the farthest we shot was 10 yards, but even with that weird trigger I still did a couple of 10 shot groups I could cover with my thumb. The 10 year old shot some 9mm today, but is mostly content to stick with .22. Now he has claimed the Buckmark. So up next probably a centerfire pistol of her own for the oldest daughter. Im thinking something which isnt a $2000 custom 2011. When our outdoor range isnt encased in a block of ice, Ill start getting them up to speed on rifles an shotguns. After they are proficient with my stuff, each kid gets to pick their own long gun (most likely an AR). Ive found that pride of ownership goes a long way toward building enthusiasm, and enthusiasm builds skill. My goal is to get them through an IDPA classifier by the end of the year. It is a good all around test of basic skill sets. Im betting I can get the older ones in at least Marksman (Im thinking oldest might actually hit Sharpshooter at the rate shes improving).
