One of my all-time favorite pics of the high school gym for me. Well before this gymnasium, the gym for the high school was situated right off the north side entrance of the school. It was located where Mr. Mangefrida would later have his wood and metal shop classes. The ceilings were super low in the old gym. My older relatives would always complain that you could not shoot a long shot in the original gym at the school as it would hit the overhead light fixtures! In the gym below, the ceilings were very high. You can spot the ropes (the knotted and unknotted) used in gym class. The old metal backboards would never survive todays high flying players as there were no retractable rims. You hang on those old rims and they were gonna bend, but good. The south end of this gym did have a set of long windows which were eventually filled in and eliminated as the sun would glare wildly into the gym during any day time use. That red padding on the wall beyond the basket was more for decoration than protection as the padding is a mere 4-5 feet from the court baseline. If you wanted to take it to the hoop with gusto, you were risking a broken collar bone or shoulder separation. Later on, the world famous peg board was installed on the gym wall near the phone.
