One of my biggest pet peeves that Ive been seeing a lot of recently is people using the word are when speaking about the actions of a band. For example: Beartooth are releasing a new record at the end of this week. This makes absolutely no sense and Im seeing so many people do it, ranging from regular friends al the way up to articles on Alternative Presss website. The band name, in this case, Beartooth, is the term used to refer to the collective group of people who make up the band. When referring to a group in this manner, that becomes singular, in which case the proper linking verb to use would be is, not are. Example: You wouldnt say the class ARE going outside for recess. Instead you would say the class IS going outside for recess. The only time that it makes grammatical sense to use are is if you said the members of Beartooth are putting out a new record at the end of this week.
