One of my challenges as a mom was getting real feedback from the kids on their day. If youve ever asked the question what did you learn at school today you will be familiar with the I dont remember line. We try really hard to sit down together for dinner. The kids rotate their seat at the table every night around a parent to ensure they have a turn sitting next to either mom or dad. Each child starting the farthest away from mom has to do what we call GBL aka Good, Bad, Learned. They need to come up with one Good thing, one Bad thing and something they Learned even if it wasnt at school. The focus is on the person giving their update and everyone respects their time with no interrupting. I participate most of the time. It is good to hear about their day and they can hear a bit about mine. We discuss any challenges on the bad as a family and the siblings comment or provide advice or sympathy. This is something we do even if we have company for dinner or one of the kids has a friend over. My teenage step-daughters friends were actually looking forward to sharing when they would stop by when dinner was wrapping up. They would sit down and give us their GBL.
