One of my favorite TV shows back in the day was Good Times. Even - TopicsExpress

One of my favorite TV shows back in the day was Good Times. Even tho the title was an oxymoron because all they had was Bad Times. Every episode was a new struggle, whether it was pops getting laid off or fired (for the 15th time in one week) to penny suffering from child abuse. And its funny today when you think about how we dictate our BLACKNESS to how much we STRUGGLE instead of how much we SUCCEED. But thats another topic altogether. I believed I enjoyed it so much because I could relate to JJ, the starving black artist, highly talented but caught up in adversity. The most embarrassing episode I ever watched is when JJ painted a portrait of a Black Jesus and how distraught and aggravated Florida Evans was when she saw it. Even tho I was not racially conscious I felt shame. I remember wanting to crawl under a rock or stick my head in a bucket of sand. I thought I was born the wrong complexion. I wanted my hair to be straight like them white boys at school. That episode marked the first time I ever felt shame for having black skin. I was six years old.
