One of my favorite assignments the last couple of years has been to help Joseph Bondarenko, the great Russian evangelist, to re-translate, re-shape, and in some cases re-write his Russian memoir for a NA audience. Now Joseph (a recent American citizen) is making a pivotal visit to his home country, Ukraine, acting as a spiritual adviser to his old friend, believer and acting president Oleksandr Turchinov. The book, The KGBs Most Wanted: The Story of Joseph Bondarenko, Russias Evangelist, will be self-published (for NOW) this spring sometime, assuming spring does arrive on our planet. Some jacket copy: Behind the oppression of the Iron Curtain in the 1950’s, a young pastor named after the biblical Joseph was arrested and thrown into a Soviet prison, where he would end up spending almost ten years (in three separate sentences) in merciless conditions. Inside the walls of the GULAG, Bondarenko faced near-starvation, beatings, torture and evil seen and unseen, all because he boldly proclaimed the Gospel... As all eyes are on Ukraine right now, this is an incredible opportunity for Joseph to influence a key world leader at a crucial moment. A note from his daughter, Vera Bondarenko: Want to let you know and would ask you to pray for Joseph and my brother Daniel who both traveled to Ukraine this past Sunday to provide the spiritual leadership and support for the current government with its acting President Oleksandr Turchinov who is an Evangelical believer and happens to be my dads friend. They are in need of trusted people at this time. It has so much significance for our family: dad was uprooted from the Soviet Ukraine and wasnt able to live there after his second imprisonment, and now goes back as a free man to serve his own people by the grace of God at 77 years of age. Please ramp up your prayers for Ukraine. God is at work, always, but in this case hes giving us a peek at what hes doing!
