One of my favorite memories occurred on the USS MAHAN in 1981. The Mahan had been designated the test platform for the new SM2 Block 2 missile. Which meant that although we had just finished an overhaul in Philly we now had to have a lot more work done on the ship to make her ready for the missile tests. So we tied up to a pier in Charleston and the shipyard came aboard. Among those YARD BIRDS coming aboard to work on my ship and my missile house was my wife. My wife who can do anything she sets her mind to had gone through the shipyards Apprentice Program and was now a Nuclear Marine Electrician. Anyway one day after the shipyard had been on board a few weeks I had occasion to visit the ships post office. There were 2 young Fireman Apprentices in line in front of me. As I looked further down the passageway I see my wife up on a ladder pulling a new cable through the cable runs. The two firemen were making flattering comments about the woman on the ladder so I said What do you suppose would happen if I just walked down there and patted that gal on the butt? The fireman laughed and dared me to do it. So I trod down the deck and reached up and patted her on the ass. She looked down, saw who it was, bent down, and kissed me. I walked back to the post office and the 2 firemen were standing there mouths agape impressed out of their boondockers. They told the story all over the ship and for awhile I was the talk of the ship.
