One of my favorite movies--animated or not--has been released on Blu-Ray. Hayao Miyazakis Princess Mononoke (1997) is a beautifully animated epic taking place in ancient Japan. A young prince named Ashitaka is banished from his native village after his arm is cursed by a demon from killing a giant boar god. During his journey west to see with eyes unclouded, he finds himself caught in the middle of a war between mankind and nature alongside a mysterious wolf girl named San whom the inhabitants of a polluting iron works town call the Mononoke Hime (Ghost Princess). Admittedly, I first saw this movie through a fansub bootleg I purchased at an SF convention (which justifiably shut off ten minutes before its climax. Never buy bootlegs, kids! lol). However, later that year, I was able to watch the full length picture on the big screen during a trip to Hawaii for the holidays. And what a glorious experience that was. It was like witnessing an animated version of an Akira Kurosawa film. I cannot wait to finally see its rich and stunning animation in all its HD glory.
