One of my favorite musical groups is Queen. It’s hard to come up with a bad song they wrote (though I’m sure there are a few.) I recently was listening to A Night at the Opera, and it’s famous (from Wayne’s World) Bohemian Rhapsody. This song is in my opinion one of the best rock songs ever written. As I was listening to it, I was caught by the beginning lyrics: Is this the real life, is this just fantasy Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see It got me thinking. Is this the real life? Is this life as good as it gets? Is it a fantasy? Fantasies can either be things you don’t want to wake from, or things you want to escape. There are without question times when escaping from this place, from this life, pass through our minds. Yet, in those times we can look to the skies and see… See what? Maybe what we see isn’t as important as looking beyond the limits of our self. We look and we see our friends and community – people who we depend on, and who depend on us. We look and see our families and children. We look and see the wonder of the world we live in. We look and see the skies above us, how they stretch on for eternity. There is so much out there greater than us. Can we not make this life a little more real? Can we not work to make our fantasies and dreams a part of our life. Look around, the world we live in is full of possibilities. The song may end, “nothing really matters to me”, but when we seek to follow, to live, to surround ourselves with what really matters, we are on a path.
