One of my favorite things about his films: Quiet scenes of inaction, where a character might glance off into the distance or sit quietly, are a common occurrence in Miyazaki’s films. In an interview with Roger Ebert, Miyazaki explained the usefulness of these. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, its just busyness, But if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension.
