One of my favorite things to tell a new customer is... Thats not what I do It usually comes after a request similar to: how much will it cost to slap a head gasket on my car Then I have to explain how a head gasket failure is usually the result of a severe overheating issue, and how repairing that failure takes a lot of care, assessment and measurement. Simply installing a gasket is a waste of time and money because the issue will repeat itself in the near future. When performed properly the cylinder head is removed from the vehicle and sent to a machine shop to inspect, test and re-machine the components to new condition. Other parts that may need attention may be replaced when the engine is reassembled, such as: water pumps, timing belts, hoses, radiators and caps. Its also a great time to update other maintenance items. Many engines specify torque to yield bolts to be used to hold pressure on the cylinder head. Failure to properly inspect and install these bolts can also lead to failure. Here is a short video showing how I properly measure the turning angle on a cylinder head bolt.
