One of my favourite writers on tax is Robert Richards. He writes great stuff and has acted for taxpayers in some really important stuff like Bamford and Ryan. He has a blog on his website. It’s a good blog. In it, he says that the world’s best tax planning idea may be to buy a boat and then go sailing for a year. I’m not going to explain why except to say that it isn’t a residency play (which requires much, much more than that) and he might be right. Pay me or look up his blog if you like boats that much. Be quick though ‘cause as of next Saturday Tony Abbott is going to stop the boats. Nice pick-up Sam Jenkins (6 years old). Maybe it isn’t all about refuges at all although that does accord more with the general feeling of xenophobia, fear and sense of entitlement that pervades Australia. Even from so-called refugee advocates – “Do it out way or not at all and keep funding us through grants and tax exemptions”. I think it is probably about refugees. I hope so. Hate to see a great tax loophole get closed.
