One of my fondest travel memories was of the Thai Loi Krathong, floating water basket offerings, in Chiang Rai, north of Chiang Mai...a festival of thanks and respect for the river spirits, where many krathong are launched into the gentle current of water. At one with the people and nature, I lit a Lanna-style sky lantern (khom loi literally: floating lanterns) which are launched into the air where they resemble large flocks of giant fluorescent jellyfish gracefully floating by through the sky in an offering of thanks and respect to nature. A deep sense of oneness came over me in that place and time.
