One of my greater concerns is that global warming, while it exists, distracts from much more serious problems such as toxic pollution and the other things we are doing to our oceans. Its not too late... yet... - Over-harvesting and large-scale habitat loss, which is likely to accelerate as technology advances the human footprint. - Toxins and garbage we dispose of in the ocean. Carbon emissions are altering the chemistry of seawater, making it more acidic. - Globalization causing a rise in container ship activity, wreaking havoc on the marine ecosystem and wildlife. (Buy local!) - Underwater mining and drilling destroying habitat and disrupting the marine ecosystem. - Climate change (global warming) driving species to favorable water temperatures that lack food and other systems they need to survive. Human impact. If we continue to deny this were simply ignorant of our own science, and to our own detriment. “If you cranked up the aquarium heater and dumped some acid in the water, your fish would not be very happy,” Dr. Pinsky said. “In effect, that’s what we’re doing to the oceans.” 514 land animal extinctions have been recorded in the last 500 years, and its believed that ocean species have fared better because humans have not meddled as much in the waters as we have on the lands. This is rapidly changing. An important summary of what were doing, and whats to come, and a definite must read...
