One of my personal favorite features on the Sun are Coronal Loops. This segment in the 171 angstrom wavelength covers approx. 2.5 days from January 3 to about 7:00 AM UT on January 6, 2015. Coronal Loops are found around sunspots and in active regions. These structures are associated with the closed magnetic field lines that connect magnetic regions on the solar surface. Energetic particles spinning along magnetic field lines make them visible to us. Many Coronal Loops last for days or weeks but most change quite rapidly. Some loops, however, are associated with solar flares and are visible for much shorter periods. The three-dimensional structure and the dynamics of these loops is an area of active research.
