One of my responsibilities as a commissioner on the public safety health and welfare commission in cottage Grove is dog court. This is when a dog has gotten out of the shower or in its own yard and bitten somebody and put on a list of potentially dangerous animals. This means anytime the animal is outside it must wear a muzzle. There is usually significant evidence showing that the dog has bitten them, marks or witnesses of this happening. The police follow a city code and make a decision that this animal is potentially dangerous or considered dangerous even. If the dog owner, the Citizen believes that this is an unfair judgment put on their dog. they can request a hearing and this is what we call dog court and try to prove that their animal does not deserve this title and the restrictions put on it. I have been involved in dog court several times and we have found where we have lifted the restrictions because we did not feel the dog met the qualifications for it and we have also kept the restrictions in place on the dog. Each case is unique I never walk into it with a judgment from what I have read in the reports, because you never know what a dog will do or a cat or any animal. So tonight I get to serve my community again On dog court, heres the thing about dog court there must be at least two commissioners but preferably three. We are not paid we do this as volunteers, and we have commissioners with pets and without pets. This way theres not a city employee or a city admin making a decision on behalf of what the city feels is right, is actually citizens defining what is correct for the citizens of the city. For me this is one of the best parts of being on the commission. actually interacting with the citizens of this town and hearing them out and hearing what they have to say. it its really great that we have a city that does things like this. If you think this is right for your city, then you should contact them and let them know about what we do here in Cottage Grove! It is a wonderful program and we have many many citizens involved with many different commissions. Get involved, it does not take a lot of time and it is so rewarding!
