One of my stone carvers is a retired London cab driver, and of course, part time philosopher. He brought me in a passage from the German philosopher Friedrich Schelling 1775-1854. His most famous quote is architecture is frozen music which I had heard before, but Id not heard of Schelling. Heres a passage about nature and art for all those creative types wondering why we do it. Thanks Peter. First there was lifeless matter from within which life emerged, first as plants, then animals, then humans, so we are part of nature, and...1.Nature is a unity. 2. Nature is an on going process. 3. Life is not separate from matter.Life is matter spiritualized and matter itself is potential spirit Nature is highly creative with new life being created constantly. Natures highest creation of all, human beings, are themselves creative in many ways, but the most spiritually advanced and significant of these ways are the creative arts. The major difference here from the rest of nature is that in man the creative artistic process is self aware. In the best of his art man is exploring and getting to understand the innermost depths of his own being. Since man is an integral part of nature this means that in creative art nature is attaining profound awareness Schelling believed that the whole vast phenomenon of nature has been a development towards self awareness, and this is achieved in the creative arts. This means the creative arts are the very summit of existence. Get in!
