One of my students came to my office today to tell me about the new film, Kill the Messenger, which hed just seen. Its based on the life of Gary Webb, a journalist who wrote for the San Jose Mercury News in California. Webb discovered the CIA was flying tons of cocaine into the US in support of the Contras, a terrorist organization that Reagan and our government were supporting, in their efforts to overthrow the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. (I remember this reporting at the time, and I was living in downtown Oakland, which was awash with crack at the time.) Webb was hounded out of journalism by the mainstream medias lack of heart to stand up for one of their own. His reporting was excellent. It was later reported that Webb committed suicide. My student told me that at the end of the movie, it said something like Webbs death was reported to be by suicide, but he suffered TWO gunshots to the head.... This movie needs wide exposure and support. I dont know where its playing nationally, but it is in Chicago and Schereville, Indiana. Please spread this word widely--this is one that needs to get public support!
