One of my students is a cute 3rd grader who plays viola. She regularly gets frustrated in class because she is behind the other students, and keep up when we play as a group. Ive asked about her practicing habits, and she says that she doesnt have time to practice, which I tell her is the root of her problems, and that as long as she doesnt practice she will continue to feel frustrated in orchestra. Finally after practice today she tells me today that she wants to quit. I ask her how the practicing is going, and says she still doesnt have time. I ask if she has more time now that dance is over, and she tells me that shes in another dance class and theyre learning new routines. Shes also been put in swimming lessons three days a week. She also has a private viola teacher, with music assignments she has to practice with her. This all on top of her normal school work, and what she feels is an egregious amount of chores on the weekend, and not to mention the important parts of just being a kid. I feel bad for this little girl, and told her if she had too much to do it wouldnt hurt my feelings if she quit if she felt she needed to. Is that too much for an 8 year old to handle?
