One of our Pets Haven volunteers was lucky enough to visit SPCA Animal Shelter in Fiji for her birthday. She asked her kids to give the money they would have spent on presents to the very deserving shelter. On visiting the shelter, they were dismayed at the lack of public and government help the shelter was able to obtain. The animals are often without veterinary care until a government appointed Veterinarian is able to come when requested, and sometimes one is not sent at all. And then, only the minimum is done for the animal, usually with much begging and cajoling from the lovely dedicated workers at the shelter. The dogs are suffering from heat stroke in the pens, and the Pets Haven volunteer gave them enough money to have these pens lined in aluminium for heat reduction. They have no access to any euthanasia medications, so often severely injured animals must wait, suffering, whilst plees to the government for an urgent veterinary visit are made. Some animal products which we take for granted are often difficult or impossible to obtain, such as elizabethan collars; which cost $50 each in Fiji. They are so desperate for food to feed the animals, that they eagerly accepted a donation of out of date baby food from a company who manufactures it. They will mix this baby food with rice, to feed their animals. The passionate and caring staff have the hardest job on earth, looking after these animals with almost nothing at their disposal. Leaves are used as kitty litter which in the big picture, is not that big a deal when they have so little and need so much. They have in their care a blind dog (pictured) who the government vet wants to euthanise. He is a beautiful dog and the shelter staff are hoping and praying that someone will adopt him even with this infirmity. A beautiful cat (also pictured) came into their care with her stomach cut open. Currently her kittens and herself are recovering at the shelter. This amazing group desperately needs their own vet; or some vets to do some voluntary work there, and access to medicines and equipment which they just cannot afford. We ask if you do visit Fiji, perhaps you could take over some much needed items for this fantastic shelter. They are desperately in need of size 2 suturing material, melaseb for mange, anti fungal creams for ringworm, tweezers to remove ticks, gauze bandages, syringes, food (a 20kg bag of Pedigree dry dog food is around $90 there), collars, leads and toys.
