One of our facebook fans has requested posts about our endemic species. Here you go! Ash Meadows has at least 26 known species of endemic plants and animals (endemic = exists no place else on earth). The most famous and easily seen is the pupfish; especially at Point of Rocks boardwalk where the Ash Meadows Amargosa pupfish thrive. The rarest pupfish in the world and the most difficult to see is the Devils Hole pupfish. February and March is when endemic flowers begin to bloom and visitors are most likely to see the Sunray. At first glance it looks like a daisy until a closer look reveals very different leaves. In the heat of the summer the delicate pink flowers of the Centaury are found along the spring pools and streams. Other endemics are not so easily found such as the naucorid. This is a tiny aquatic insect, the size of your smallest fingernail, prefers mud type areas. Plants such as the milkvetch are off the beaten path where you would never expect anything to grow. Check out our website for photos of these species and more. fws.gov/refuge/Ash_Meadows/sections/wildlife_and_habitat/endemics.html
