One of our followers, Mark Debono, shared this article with me and I thought it would make a valuable post on Mirror Friendly. So here goes... This is Maggie De Block - Belgiums new Minister of Public Health. Maggie practiced medicine as a general practitioner for 25 years. Like Malta, Belgium has been facing a serious problem of obesity in the past few years and the government is trying to reverse this growing problem. As you can see, Maggie is obese. Now I strongly support the idea behind practice what you preach and I also believe in setting a tone at the top to lead by example. Maggie might have proven her ministerial skills in other areas and her knowledge of health must probably be very rich since she worked in this sector for 25 years. However Maggies physical condition proves that she has failed big time in applying her knowledge to her own self. In my eyes, an obese Minister of Health lacks credibility. How can I trust someone with the job of pulling my country out of obesity if that someone is obese? How can you motivate a nation to change its lifestyle habits when you, for starters, do not practice such habits? If the decision of appointing a Minister of Public Health rested in my hands, I would go for someone who, like Maggie, is a competent leader possessing ministerial skills, but who above all transmits a living example of physical activity, not just through his/her looks but also through a proven lifestyle; an athlete, someone who does not smoke, someone who eats healthy, someone who looks healthy. Would you appoint a known racist to lead the fight against the problem of racism? Would you ask someone who never swam to teach you how to dive? My opinion assumes that Maggie is not sick e.g. with thyroid problems. In that case one would have to look at the kind of lifestyle she lives before making a judgement. However from the way she defends herself in the article I do not get the feeling that she is suffering from some condition. What are your thoughts and opinions in this regard? Do you agree? Do you disagree? Your comments are very welcome :)
