One of our hometown boys from Sperry was a naval officer who was killed in the Pentagon on 9-11-01. His mother lobbied the town council for permission to install an elaborate monument in front of the National Guard Armory, (In 1991, my fellow merchants and I secured the abandoned facility for use as the town hall) from which hundreds of Army personnel left for active duty over the years. Fifteen or so Sperry residents had been killed in the foxholes and jungles of faraway countries during various battles over the decades. I lost my bid to add the names of those brave souls to the monument, with the council persons quite haughtily denying my request. I always thought that Army soldiers killed in action were at least as important as a naval officer killed in an office environment...... but .... No. That town meeting and its participants still haunt me.
