One of the arguments that is marshalled against lotteries is that they prey on the poor and the ignorant. People are beguiled of money everyday and yet many see it as the way they can thrive in life. As for me, lottery is one of such things that has been made legal but not necessarily moral or fair. My assertion may not be far from the truth. The popular "Baba Ijebu” lottery has inflicted poverty to many. Some had long quit Lagos as a result of this. Of course such event can cause hardship to individuals and businesses. The downsides are plentiful, ranging from untold hardship, irresponsibility, reckless spending etc. Perhaps also, it is to make an instant enemy of benevolent attitude. What worries me most is the constantly burgeoning rate of spending that far surpasses the rate of replacement. The few that win it have always seen their euphoria rapidly fizzling into surly disappointment as they always try to get the double of their jackpot and end up winning nothing.
