One of the attractions to Paganism and in this case, the Northern Tradition and its form of Shamanism, was its flexibility and adaptability (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). Those who have returned to the Norse spirituality today have a brand of it which is just as coded and rigid as a religion. A curious reversal since it was the rigidity of world religions that devotees had rebelled against way back in the days of early Christianity. Wizards in the ancient Northern Tradition considered themselves to be related to Odin and practiced with a shamanistic system that is as old as any known world religion. Scholars have researched the runic process and the energies that are alleged to lie within them. Some evidence actually has arisen that suggests that the runes actually transform the user alchemically into not just a shaman but into blood-kin with the All Father himself by way of intrinsic energies trapped fundamentally within the runes. The underpinning concepts of the Northern shamanism derive from natural forces within and without the runes by way of a cosmic alignment. The procedures are intended for inner and outer benefit for both individual and group benefit. Both the I Ching and Tarot have followed from Runic Divination, and also suggest formation of a symbolic connection that espouses a formulaic cosmic attunement procedure. As the Pagan religions were decimated by the press of Christianity in the hands of the Roman Empire, the belief system went underground…but did not disappear. Humans have continued to press ever onward and upward and mythology is and has been the springboard foundation of all religions, science, and technologies. This is much like the scientific process’s use of theory or hypothesis as the underpinning objective to discern in an experiment. Curiously, as pragmatic as modern science should profess itself to be, it owes its entire premise to myth …or as the Navy prefers …a S.W.A.G. …also known as a “Scientifically Wild @ss Guess” (PFI, 2012; Engbeck, 2012). There are intelligences and forces beyond what humans currently understand in plain terms…this much is known (Weschcke & Slate, 2012). Sense and culture grow from myth, and Shamans such as those from the Norse Tradition recognized this truth and cultivated connection with them. As these bold travelers sought and gained understanding, the presence of supernatural beings came to be understood within roles and mythic cultural archetypes. The view is that the supernatural beings themselves continued the learning process outward from their existence but also lent discovery into the plain world of their spirit “offspring” humans. Understanding and practical use of the supernatural intelligences is Shamanism, and is also known by various other names such as Divination. The practices of these Divine arts were and are perhaps afforded special abilities such as the ability to traverse the inner world of space-time continuum. The evolution of these practices has lead to significant explanation in areas that expose the relationship between humanity and the cosmic forces of life and the universe. It was a rugged northern climate that propelled the use of The Northern Tradition, and such is the character of the current scenario, although the terms of the struggle are different now. Survival yet requires strategy, planning, and knowledge. Today, the human existence is threatened by temperate forces much as the duality of fire and ice motivated in ancient Nordic lands and seas. The challenge of the rugged northern lands generated an adventurous people who had to seek answers to difficulty and elusive questions in order to survive. As Vikings set forth to adventure and discover in new worlds, they did in fact find such. Indeed, long before Christopher Columbus founded America and released humans from the belief that the world was flat, these hearty, innovative, highly adventurous, while often brutally capable, wanderers discovered the western lands and named them “Vineland.” The interpretations that arise from this nomadic and adventurous people and their ancient process of divining from rune and other artifact and incident reading are alive and well today, and may be considered as the Northern Creationism.
