One of the benefits of a global auto show is to talk with folks from all over the world. Spent some time Monday with Matthias Wissmann, who runs the VDA - Germanys auto trade association. He reports things are looking great for his members, particularly in the US, where sales are up 2% to a record 1.4 m units, and car market share 12.8%. The really good news is that the German auto industry is growing here, with 40% of sales from local plants, with the rest exported to Asia and Europe. The German OEMs have 32,600 employees in the US, while the German suppliers employ another 72,000. Both are up 3,800 total from last year. . . . Because the Germans are so export dependent here, as well as in Germany where 75% of production is exported, Wissmann stressed a major political goal continues to be the fight for a new trade agreement - the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP).
