One of the best lectures I ever attended was by the poet James Galvin, on the topic of the periodic sentence in Henry James. A periodic sentence is one in which the complete sense cant be known till the last word, like, With a blood-curdling scream, the eagle went after the rabbit. You could flip those clauses, but, after rabbit, you pretty much got it. Galvin said James was so compelling because every sentence was fueled by suspense. Everybodys always like diction, diction, diction. But for me? Its the syntax.
