One of the biggest challenges at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is to enhance safety of the surrounding region, by removing spent fuel from the reactor buildings and reducing the overall risk at the site. For the Unit 1 and Unit 3 reactor buildings, our first task before removing the fuel is to remove the debris which is scattered on top of the buildings due to the hydrogen explosion that occurred in March 2011. At the Unit 1 reactor building, a cover to prevent radioactive material from scattering encompassing the entire reactor building was installed in October, 2011. To prepare for fuel removal, the cover will be dismantled so as to facilitate the removal of debris on top of the building. Layers of measures to prevent the scattering of radioactive material will be taken, monitoring of radioactive material concentration and radiation dose will be strengthened to progress the dismantling.
