One of the brightest and most sensitive intellects I know said this: ...a democracy whose abuse of power goes unpunished, whether by CIA in the dark or by law enforcement on video camera? Where has our moral compass gone? How do we dare to call ourselves civilized or just? I agree...and yet I keep wondering if there was ever anything more than a fictional compass to lose: genocide, slavery, Jim Crow, residential schools, the Edmund Pettis bridge, Mossadegh, Allende, Suharto, Hussein, Qaddafi, El Salvador, Bay of Pigs, the Duvaliers, Fred Hampton, Iran-Contra, Eric Garner, Oscar Grant, Matthew Shephard... Regrettably, it seems we havent lost a compass - weve simply wiped the grease off the mirror.
