One of the common causes of early demise in computers is overheating, and the most common reason for that is restricted airflow. Modern computers are engineered to move just enough air between the internal components to keep cool. But if that airflow is restricted, processors and graphic cards can overheat, causing serious damage. Make sure you keep your tower in a well-ventilated area, not closed away in a tight cupboard. If youre using a notebook computer, keep it on a hard, flat surface, not on a blanket, and ironically not on top of your lap. If youre using an all-in-one computer like an iMac, make sure the intake and exhaust vents are clear of clutter. Just as important, your computer should be opened up every once in a while to clear out dust, pet hair and debris like you see here. An air compressor or a can of air are best for this job. Never use a vacuum cleaner or dustbuster, which could cause a static charge or spark. If youre not comfortable doing the job yourself, or if you dont have the necessary tools to do the job right, bring it to a trusted tech. Were more and more dependent on our computers all the time. Its critically important to maintain your investment and keep it running the way it was intended.
