One of the continuing areas of neglect in forest management and land use decision making are cultural heritage resources and other non-timber values. With the reduction of provincial budgets for monitoring of impacts, there are some districts where zero impacts monitoring is taking place to insure First Nations resources are being adequately conserved and/or protected. There are many situations where the timber interests of decision making exclude the input and needs of traditional use knowledge holders and practitioners. These gaps need to be closed and a cumulative effects framework developed if there are going to be substantive changes to protect First Nations interests beyond timber harvesting opportunities.
