One of the coolest things in Denver is the placement of a dozen or so brightly painted old upright pianos all along the downtown mall. They are there for anyone to play and it makes for an eclectic mix of sound along the way. I was taking my last walk around the block tonight and my ear was drawn to a familiar tune being earnestly pounded out in 3/4 time. There was a grizzled old man -long white scraggly hair and beard- hunched over the keys. One of the dozens of street people I normally try to avoid when I wander downtown. His bent, dirty fingers played the old tune- eyes closed in a kind of meditation. I started to walk on but something made me turn back to him. I started singing along "Drink to me only with thine eyes...".He smiled and nodded to me. We finished the song and I walked on. "The thirst that from the soul doth rise, doth ask a drink divine". Yep.
