One of the delights of having a regular market stall is meeting a stream of interesting people. We have one thing in common already. The fact they are there means they have an interest in ceramics and possibly rainforest conservation as well. Its surprising how many absorbing conversations one can have in a day. One woman yesterday had been in the public service and was lamenting how it is being dismantled by conservative governments who believe public is bad and private is good -pure old-fashioned ideology. As she pointed out, it changes from a genuine public service to one driven by the profit motive with the emphasis on maximising shareholder returns. The person using the service is now just another customer from whom money is to be extracted. Its a real tragedy that so much is being privatised and we are losing that personal touch of the public servant who is not beholden to a corporation and its directors. Medicare and TAFE and so much more are under attack by the right wing ideologues. We need to remember this when we go to vote.
