One of the great Black economists said he cut through the lawn of the governors house back in the 40s, which meant instant death, for Black people back then. The sheriff caught him and asked what is he doing and where is he going. The kid, he was a kid at the time, said, I is free. The sheriff said, oh yeah, says who. The kid reached into his pocket and produced a piece of paper and said, says so right here, and handed it to the sheriff. He knew for a fact the white sheriff couldnt read. The sheriff pretended to read the paper and said, oh is that so, hmm alright then go on, and handed the paper back. The Black economist was telling the story, as an example of how Blacks had shot past poor whites in education, quickly after slavery. The entire Black population had gone from it being against the law to teach Blacks how to read, to everyone reading and writing in about 40 years. Meanwhile poor whites still didnt read, and there had been no law holding them back. To this day there are whole stocks of white people in rural areas that still are completely uneducated, regardless of state laws requiring schooling.
